Trip to Hocking Hills

This past weekend, Amy-Marie and I took a trip to the Hocking Hills region of Southeast Ohio, neither one of us had been there before.   We were both amazed and awed by how breathtaking it was, who knew Ohio could be so beautiful!!   Our home base for the weekend was a little cabin in the woods...yeah yeah I know, we really "roughed it" but hey that hot tub on the deck sure felt good after a day of hiking!!   These pictures were taken on our hikes to Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Conkle's Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls and The Rock House.

The Muffin Man!

It's official, I'm no longer a muffin making virgin.  My first muffins turned out quite well and they tasted delicious!!  I wish I could share them with all but for now these pictures will have to do.  ENJOY!

store bought -vs- organic free range

Can you guess which eggs were store bought and which ones were from chickens raised free range organic?   It's not too hard is it!?  and yes they taste as good as they look.   For those of you who are still guessing, the free range organic are the big firm bright yellow ones in the center.   These eggs came from my brothers farm where he raises, among many other delicious things, free range organic chickens.    I'm always amazed how much better they are then the eggs at the grocery store.  This picture reminds me of the old saying, "a picture can tell a thousand words"

Oil Can "TANK": new view

Found "ready-made"

I found this "hand" in the wall of an old house I was working on a few years ago.  I was tearing the old lathe and plaster wall down when I came across this lathe "hand" nailed around an electrical outlet.  I was amazed at how much it resembled a human hand with four fingers and a bent thumb.   I left the nails in the hand, it was nailed to a stud, as a reminder of where it came from.

Forest Spirit

I found this amazing "mask" growing out of the side of a large tree that had fallen in my parents woods.  The tree looked like it had been burnt at one time, hence the darkness of the wood; I suppose it could have been caused by lightning.   I'm fascinated by how eerily realistic it is, the nostrils, the large menacing eye and the closed or missing eye on the other side.   My theory is that it was once a powerful forest spirit who must have done something to anger the Gods so Zeus punished him by sending a lightning bolt down from the heavens and this burnt mask was all that remained as a reminder to the other spirits to behave or else!   Hmmm... I hope I didn't anger Zeus by removing it from the tree.   The way I look at it the tree was dead anyway so actually I prevented it from rotting away... so Zeus should be pleased right?  Nevertheless, I think I'll play it safe and stay inside the next time there's a lightning storm.
