The Huntington Arena Sculpture

Since my last post, the GMW (Ganz/Mueller/Williams) Public Art team has successfully fabricated and installed our sculpture RE-surgence at the Huntington Center Arena in downtown Toledo, Ohio.   The installation went relatively smoothly, we had a few minor hiccups but nothing serious.   It looks great; I couldn't be happier!   I want to thank our amazing intern from BGSU Kevin Vanek.   He was a tremendous help and I wish him the best of luck as he pursues his MFA at East Carolina University.  I also want to thank the Imagination Station Science Center in Toledo for the space they gave us to build RE-surgence.   It was a great collaboration, the space was amazing!    Although the pictures look great, thanks to Keith Meiser Photography in Bowling Green, Ohio, you really do have to experience this sculpture in person to really get the full effect.   The way the lights slowly fade from color to color makes the piece feel as though it's alive and breathing.   The whole sculpture was made of blue, green and purple "reclaimed" plastic.   We had a few people ask us if we painted the plastic to get the gradation.   Nothing was painted on this piece, it's all made of plastic toys, kitchen utensils, tools, furniture and a multitude of parts and pieces of everyday objects.   We figured we used about a thousand pieces of plastic.  It was all attached to the aluminum mesh backers with blue, green or purple zip ties.  The plastic used in the sculpture was either donated by the public or found at various Goodwills or garage sales.  These pictures show the whole time span from our initial site visit to the "sneek peek" unveiling party.   Since the project went so well, GMW has decided to apply for a commission for the new Wishard Hospital being built in Indianapolis, Indiana...wish us luck!  I've also attached a few links below.   the one is our official website and the other is a link to a nice little video done by Toledo.com.
